April 26, 2009 - 1st Annual Aquathon for Autism

Pathfinders offers sincere appreciation to Ian Silverman , his family and friends and to all who participated on Sunday, April 26, 2009 in the First Annual Aquathon for Autism!

Ian and his fellow NBAC swimmers (North Baltimore Aquatic Club at Meadowbrook in Baltimore) recruited friends and pledges to SWIM a 26-mile relay to benefit Pathfinders for Autism. But, the group was so enthusiastic, they didn't stop there - swimming over 30 miles and raising nearly $8,000 for Pathfinders for Autism!

U.S. Olympic Champions Katie Hoff and Michael Phelps were on hand to swim the opening laps. Mason Surhoff, son of B.J. and Polly Surhoff (co-founders of Pathfinders for Autism), swam next and was quickly followed by his siblings Kendall, Austin and Jordan and scores of other young people.

The entire event took hours - and the enthusiasm never waned as one after another swimmers dove in for their next round.

Many thanks to the swimmers, volunteers, and spectators who arrived to cheer the kids on! And, special thanks to Ian, his mom, Dawn, and all of the local businesses, including Meadowbrook, who contributed to this amazing event!

The silent auction alone raised $39,555 with guests bidding on items such as an autographed portrait of Michael Phelps by Baltimore artist Kevin Charles, which sold for $6,000. Some of the other hot ticket items were a trip for two to New York City to meet renowned fashion designer Nicole Miller and an autographed guitar by pop culture sensation The Jonas Brothers.
