Estate Planning for Special Needs Workshop

6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Brennen School 144 Brennen Drive Newark, DE 19713

Planning for the future of a loved one with a disability can be a complicated maze to navigate. Most families aren't aware that if they leave more than $2,000 in countable resources to their child or adult dependent with a disability, the individual will lose eligibility for most needs-based government benefits. Proper financial and legal estate planning can help protect eligibility for these benefits - - which include Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and other government programs. Have you outlined a plan to accommodate and support your child’s future needs for their lifetime? Have you written a Letter of Intent (a non-legal document) outlining your dreams and goals so those caring for your child will also know your wishes? Have you implemented plans to direct your child’s portion of your estate in a manner that will not cause them to lose their important benefit eligibility? These topics, as well as self-determination, guardianship, powers of attorney, circles of support and special needs trusts and how to create an estate to fund them will be discussed in this workshop. This 2-hour workshop will be presented in easy-to-understand terms and Diann Jones will allow for questions during the presentation.
