African American Mothers and Their Children with Autism: Language, Culture and Communication

Eligibility Criteria: African American mothers and African American children with Autism. Ages 5-10 years.

The purpose of the study is:
- To learn more about the experiences of African American mothers raising a child with autism
- To learn more about language development and child rearing practices
- To learn more abou communicative interactions
- To help researchersand other professionals learn more about African American culture
- To help researchers provide more culturally competent services

There are two parts in this study. The first part involves mothers completing a series of questionnaires and participating in an interview. The first part of the study will take about an hour and a half of your time. The second part of the study involves observing you and your child interacting. The second part of the study will take place over a month. You may decide to participate in one or both parts of the study.

The information may assist speech-language pathologists and other professionals who interact with your child in providing more culturally competent services. This information may also raise awareness of autism among African Americans as well as the community at large.
