Dietary Cholesterol Supplementation in Children with ASD Who Have Abnormally Low Cholesterol

Kennedy Krieger Institute and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are looking for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) to participate in a clinical research study of dietary cholesterol supplementation in children with ASD who have abnormally low cholesterol.

Your child may qualify if he/she:
• is 4.0-12.0 years of age
• has a diagnosis of Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder or Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not-Otherwise-Specified (PDD-NOS)
• is in good general health

Your child may not qualify if he/she:
• has had a seizure in the last 3 months
• is taking a medication that may interfere with cholesterol levels or metabolism
• is not able to understand and/or speak English

What is involved:
• Up to 8 conveniently scheduled clinic visits (about 3 to 8 hours each visit), where children will participate in play-based, structured activities and/or participate in a study of dietary cholesterol.
• Families may participate at either study site:
o Kennedy Krieger Institute, 716 North Broadway, Baltimore, Maryland 21205
o NIH Clinical Center, 9000 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, Maryland 20892
• Compensation: Free parking and some reimbursement for time and travel for completed visits.
