Intervention Strategies for Toddlers
You and your toddler may be eligible to participate in a research study that
examines intervention strategies for toddlers at risk for an autism spectrum
disorder.
What Will Be Involved?
• Telephone screening interview (approx. 1 hour)
• Eligibility testing (play-based developmental assessments; approx. 2 hours).
• Enrollment in 1 or more of the following treatments, to be determined randomly (as if by tossing a coin):
o One to two-hour individual therapeutic parent training sessions, once every week for 6 months, at your
home or in our clinic
o parent training/enrichment sessions for one to two hours once a week in our clinic for 20 sessions
o playgroup sessions for 1-2 hours twice a week for 6 months
• Play-based developmental assessments (approx. 3.5 to 4 hours) before intervention, monthly after the start of
intervention (less than 1 hour), immediately after the end of intervention, and 6 months after the end of intervention.
An assessment will also be conducted 3 months into treatment (1.5-2 hours).
• Forms and questionnaires completed (approx. 3.5 hours) before each assessment.
• Assessments will be video recorded for later coding.
What Are The Benefits of Participating?
• There are no direct medical benefits for your child, although there could be benefits to your child’s communication
and social development.
• Your child will receive free developmental research assessments (e.g., language and social) and up to six months of free
intervention.
• Your participation will advance understanding of early development, developmental disorders, and early intervention
services.
What Are The Risks?
• Your child may get tired during an assessment. In the event that this happens, breaks will be taken as often as needed.
If necessary, testing can continue on another day.
• Because of the time commitment involved, we will be flexible in scheduling assessments.
• Discomfort with personal questions during the parent interviews and being videotaped during assessments are possible
risks.
• Loss of confidentiality is another possible risk. We will take all possible steps to maintain confidentiality.
